Why transport is qualified, not just monitored

EU GDP places the onus on the distributor to maintain required storage conditions during transport, whatever the mode, and to take account of route and seasonal conditions — the EU GDP transportation requirements. Monitoring a shipment tells you after the fact whether it stayed in condition; qualification establishes in advance that it will, under the range of conditions the lane actually presents. Both are needed — qualification designs the solution, monitoring verifies each execution.

The distinction matters because transport conditions are only partly under the shipper’s control. You cannot control an August heatwave, a delayed flight, or a truck idling at a border, so qualification is built around worst-case ambient profiles rather than typical ones. A packout qualified only against a mild average will fail exactly when it matters most — during the extreme events that qualification exists to survive.

Qualifying the three variables

Transport qualification addresses three interacting variables. The packaging system — insulated shippers, phase-change materials, refrigerants — is qualified through thermal testing against defined ambient profiles for a defined duration, establishing how long it holds condition and under what load. The lane — origin, destination, mode, transit time, and seasonal ambient — defines the challenge the packout must survive.
