PURPOSE

Lane qualification demonstrates that a defined shipping configuration maintains product within range over a specific origin, destination, route and season. The same packout that performs perfectly on a short domestic route can fail on a longer one with a tarmac hold in a hot climate. Whether product that left the envelope remains fit is a stability determination your quality unit makes; the packout data only says the envelope was left.

How to Use It

1Qualify the lane rather than the container; route, season and handling are the variables that fail, and a chamber contains none of them.
2Use route-specific seasonal ambient data, because generic curves do not contain the tarmac hold or the customs delay that causes the excursion.
3Qualify beyond the expected duration with a stated margin, since delay is the normal case rather than the exception on most lanes.
4Write the packing instruction to be executed exactly, conditioning times included; a packout qualified one way and packed another is unqualified.
5Decide excursions against product stability data, not the packout qualification — the packout says the envelope was left, not whether product is fit.
6Define requalification triggers in advance, so a carrier or routing change does not silently invalidate the qualification you rely on.

REGULATORY CONTEXT

WHO TRS 961 Annex 9 sets the model guidance for the storage and transport of time- and temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products, and PDA Technical Report No. 39 addresses cold chain guidance including lane and packout qualification.
