What a role map is not
A role map is orientation — not a job description, a competency framework, or a statement of what any employer expects of you.
You make medicines to order when the manufactured version does not exist, does not suit a patient, or is unavailable. You are a pharmacist doing pharmacy, not a factory doing small batches.
You prepare non-sterile and sterile preparations against the compendial chapters, assign beyond-use dates from evidence rather than convenience, and work within the boundary between pharmacy compounding and manufacture. Your primary regulator is usually your state board rather than the federal agency.
You occupy the seam the regulatory system finds hardest — patient-specific supply that cannot be inspected like a factory and cannot be excused like a prescription — and the seam is defended by discipline about scope.

Inside a pharmacy, at the point where a prescriber’s need meets a preparation no manufacturer supplies.
- A prescription or clinical need
- A supply gap or a shortage of the manufactured product
- Dispensing to the identified patient
- Administration by a clinician
- Components and their certificates of analysis
- A validated facility and environmental controls appropriate to the preparation
- Trained personnel whose technique has been demonstrated, not assumed
- Prescribers relying on the preparation being what the label says
- Patients with no alternative supply
- The professional judgement that compounding is appropriate for this patient
- The beyond-use date and the evidence supporting it
- The decision not to compound where the request crosses into manufacture
- The clinical decision to prescribe
- Approval of the preparation as a marketed product — there is none
- The manufactured alternative’s supply
- The pharmacist-in-charge and the state board of pharmacy
- Refusal, where a request would require operating outside the compounding exemption
- Compounding records tying components, technique and personnel to a preparation
- Beyond-use-date rationale and any supporting stability information
- Environmental and personnel qualification records for sterile work
