How much qualification does an equipment replacement need?
Exactly as much as its impact on product quality and the validated state warrants — no more, no less. A true like-for-like swap of a non-critical component may need minimal requalification; a replacement that changes a critical parameter, a material contact surface, or a control system needs qualification and possibly process re-validation. The skill is the risk-based impact assessment that scopes it, defensibly, before the work starts.
Why is change control the heart of an equipment replacement?
Because the facility is licensed and validated, so a replacement is a change to a controlled system. Change control is what assesses the impact on the existing validated state and on downstream systems, sets the requalification scope, and captures the evidence. An equipment swap done outside change control — or with the impact assessment skipped — is a common and avoidable inspection finding.
