What makes brownfield harder than greenfield?
The live operation. A brownfield project must protect ongoing production — its people, its supply commitments, and above all its validated state — while construction happens alongside it. Cross-contamination risk, utility tie-ins, and shutdown windows all have to fit the operating schedule, and every change is assessed against the existing qualified state under change control rather than on a blank sheet.
How is change control different on a brownfield project?
It is central rather than incidental. Because the facility is already licensed and validated, the project is a large, sustained set of changes to a controlled system — each tie-in, modification, and new system must be assessed for its impact on the existing validated state and approved by quality before it touches live operations. A field change processed as a project variation but never through change control is the classic brownfield inspection finding.
