Corrective Action vs Preventive Action

Fix what happened vs stop what could happen — the two halves of CAPA.

What a comparison is not

A comparison is SPEQ’s reading of how two published documents differ. Neither is the right answer, it is not a determination of which applies to you, and neither is summarised in a way that replaces reading it.

Corrective Action
Eliminate the cause of a detected problem
Preventive Action
Eliminate the cause of a potential problem

Corrective action and preventive action are the two halves of CAPA. A corrective action eliminates the cause of a nonconformity that has already occurred, so it does not recur. A preventive action eliminates the cause of a potential nonconformity, so it does not occur in the first place. The distinction matters because inspectors probe whether firms do the preventive half at all.

WHEN TO LEAN CORRECTIVE ACTION

Take corrective action when a nonconformity has occurred — investigate the root cause and change the system so that specific problem does not recur.

WHEN TO LEAN PREVENTIVE ACTION

Take preventive action when analysis (trends, risk assessments, near-misses) identifies a potential problem — act to remove its cause before it ever produces a nonconformity.

THE BOTTOM LINE · SPEQ SYNTHESIS

Corrective acts on what happened; preventive acts on what could. Most firms do corrective action well and preventive action poorly or not at all — which is exactly what inspectors probe. A CAPA system that only ever reacts to problems is missing half its purpose; the preventive half turns trend and risk data into action before a nonconformity occurs.

Corrective Action vs Preventive Action: frequently asked questions

Common questions on how Corrective Action and Preventive Action differ and when each applies.

What is the difference between corrective and preventive action?

Corrective action eliminates the cause of a nonconformity that has already occurred, to prevent recurrence. Preventive action eliminates the cause of a potential nonconformity, to prevent it occurring at all. One is reactive; the other is proactive. Together they form CAPA.

Why do firms struggle with preventive action?

Because it requires proactively mining trends, risk assessments, and near-misses to act on problems that have not yet happened — harder than reacting to a specific event. Inspectors frequently find robust corrective action but weak or absent preventive action, which is a common finding.

Is retraining a corrective or preventive action?

Retraining is usually a weak corrective action (and often insufficient on its own), because it treats the occurrence rather than changing the system. Genuine preventive action changes the system so the potential cause is removed — not just refreshing people on the existing procedure.
