Choose moist-heat (steam) sterilization wherever the product and container can withstand it — it is the most robust, residual-free terminal method, validated via F0 / accumulated lethality.

Choose EO or radiation for heat-sensitive products and devices — EO for materials that tolerate gas exposure (managing toxic residuals), radiation (gamma/E-beam) for products that tolerate a validated absorbed dose (managing material degradation).

Which sterilization method do regulators prefer?

Terminal sterilization by moist heat (steam) is generally preferred where the product can withstand it, because it is robust, well-understood, and leaves no residue. Other methods (EO, radiation, sterile filtration/aseptic processing) are used when the product cannot tolerate heat.

What is F0?

F0 is the accumulated lethality of a moist-heat sterilization cycle expressed as equivalent minutes at 121°C. It integrates the temperature over time to quantify the microbial-kill delivered, and is the key parameter for validating and monitoring steam sterilization.

Why use EO or radiation instead of steam?

Because many products and devices are heat- or moisture-sensitive. EO gas sterilizes at lower temperatures (but leaves residuals to control), and radiation (gamma or electron-beam) sterilizes by absorbed dose (but can degrade some materials). Material compatibility determines the choice.
