Moving a validated (or to-be-validated) process from a sending unit to a receiving unit — a different site, line, or organisation. The physical project is often small; the risk lives in reproducing the process and its knowledge faithfully.

Unlike greenfield, the process already exists and is understood somewhere — the project is about faithful reproduction and comparability, not invention, so process validation and knowledge transfer dominate over construction.

Why do technology transfers fail even when the paperwork is complete?
Because much of what makes a process work is tacit — operator technique, informal set-points, the feel for when something is off — and it does not travel with the batch records. A transfer that moves only the documents can reproduce the procedure and still miss the process. Good transfers move knowledge deliberately: joint runs, sending-unit support on site, and a comparability assessment that proves the receiving unit gets the same result.
Does a technology transfer need its own process validation?
Almost always, on the receiving asset — whether confirmatory or full depends on how different the equipment, scale, and site are. Equipment and scale differences can change process behaviour even when the recipe is identical, so the receiving unit must demonstrate the process is reproducible and in control there, and satisfy any regulatory variation and comparability requirements before commercial supply.
