What a definition is not

A definition is SPEQ’s plain-language decode of how a term is used in practice, cited to the documents that define it. It is a practitioner reference, not legal or regulatory advice, it does not replace the definition in the source, and where a regulator’s wording differs the regulator’s wording governs.

A specific design feature of a system — a material of construction, an instrument range, an alarm setpoint, a slope, an interlock — that must be present and correct in order to control an identified critical aspect. CDEs are identified during design review and are what qualification actually verifies.

Critical aspects and critical design elements are a pair and are not interchangeable. A critical aspect is the characteristic that matters to product quality; a critical design element is the concrete piece of the design that delivers it. "Product contact surfaces must not shed particles" is an aspect; "316L stainless, Ra ≤ 0.5 µm" is the element.

Identifying CDEs before construction is the entire point of the design review. Once a vessel is fabricated with the wrong surface finish, the cost of the miss is capital, not paperwork — which is why the ISPE Vol. 5 approach places the review early rather than treating design as an input to qualification.
