What a definition is not
A definition is SPEQ’s plain-language decode of how a term is used in practice, cited to the documents that define it. It is a practitioner reference, not legal or regulatory advice, it does not replace the definition in the source, and where a regulator’s wording differs the regulator’s wording governs.
A characteristic of a facility, system, or piece of equipment — such as a specific parameter, function, or component — whose failure or deviation from its acceptance criterion has a direct, demonstrable impact on product quality, and which therefore requires formal qualification and ongoing control under the ASTM E2500 risk-based qualification approach.
Not every function of a piece of equipment matters equally to product quality — a machine may have dozens of parameters, but only some of them directly determine whether the product coming off it is within specification. Identifying critical aspects early, through a documented impact and risk assessment, is what allows a qualification effort to concentrate its rigor where it actually matters.
This is the mechanism that separates direct-impact systems, which require full formal qualification, from indirect-impact or no-impact elements, which may be handled through good engineering practice alone. Getting the critical-aspect assessment wrong in either direction either wastes qualification effort on things that don’t affect quality, or — more seriously — leaves a genuinely quality-critical function unverified.
