What a definition is not
A definition is SPEQ’s plain-language decode of how a term is used in practice, cited to the documents that define it. It is a practitioner reference, not legal or regulatory advice, it does not replace the definition in the source, and where a regulator’s wording differs the regulator’s wording governs.
A functional risk assessment evaluates each function of a computerized system or process for its impact on product quality, patient safety, and data integrity, and drives the depth of specification and testing applied to it. It is how a validation effort is scaled — high-risk functions get rigorous testing, low-risk functions get proportionate coverage.
In GAMP 5 the functional risk assessment is the engine of the risk-based approach: functions are scored on impact and likelihood/detectability, and the resulting risk class determines whether a function is tested exhaustively, sampled, or covered by supplier documentation leveraged from a competent vendor.
This is the mechanism that separates modern Computer Software Assurance (CSA) from exhaustive CSV: critical-thinking about intended use focuses effort where failure would harm the patient or corrupt the record, rather than documenting every screen equally.
