ASME BPE is a voluntary consensus standard with no regulatory enforcement of its own. It matters because it defines what "hygienic design" concretely means: specifying it in a purchase order gives an enforceable contractual basis for surface finish, weld quality, drainability, and material traceability that a general GMP requirement for suitable equipment does not.

- BPE turns "hygienic design" from an aspiration into a specifiable, inspectable requirement with numbers attached.
- Cite it in the URS and purchase specification — retrofitting surface finish, slope, or drainability after installation is expensive and sometimes impossible.
