American Society of Mechanical Engineers
Author of the Bioprocessing Equipment (BPE) standard for hygienic design, materials, and surface finish in bioprocess systems.
WHAT ASME COVERS
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers develops engineering codes and standards. For bioprocessing, ASME BPE — Bioprocessing Equipment — sets requirements for the design, materials, fabrication, and surface finish of equipment and systems in contact with product.
WHERE IT SITS INTERNATIONALLY
ASME BPE is the de facto international reference for bioprocessing equipment design, used alongside EU GMP and ISPE guidance on facility and equipment engineering. It sits naturally with ASTM E2500: E2500 governs how verification is scoped and evidenced, while BPE governs what the hardware must be in the first place.
HOW ITS REQUIREMENTS BITE
ASME BPE is a voluntary consensus standard with no regulatory enforcement of its own. It matters because it defines what "hygienic design" concretely means: specifying it in a purchase order gives an enforceable contractual basis for surface finish, weld quality, drainability, and material traceability that a general GMP requirement for suitable equipment does not.
WHAT ASME PUBLISHES
- 01ASME BPE — Bioprocessing Equipment standard
- 02Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (BPVC), relevant to process vessels
- 03B31.3 Process Piping
- 04Standards for materials, welding qualification, and surface finish
WHAT PRACTITIONERS GET WRONG
- ›BPE turns "hygienic design" from an aspiration into a specifiable, inspectable requirement with numbers attached.
- ›Cite it in the URS and purchase specification — retrofitting surface finish, slope, or drainability after installation is expensive and sometimes impossible.
- ›It covers surface finish, weld quality, drainability, and material traceability in concrete terms, and it defines the documentation a fabricator must hand over.
- ›It complements GMP requirements for suitable equipment; it does not replace qualification, and a BPE-compliant skid still has to be qualified.
- ›Weld and material documentation packages built to BPE become qualification evidence later — treat them as GMP records from the fabrication stage, not as construction paperwork.
