What a definition is not

Bracketing (and its cousin, worst-case selection) is a scientifically justified strategy to validate the extremes of a range of similar products, equipment, or process parameters rather than every permutation, on the rationale that the extremes bound everything between them. It reduces validation effort while still assuring the full matrix is covered.

In cleaning validation, the worst-case product is the one that is hardest to clean, least soluble, and/or most toxic; validating it is taken to cover easier products on the same equipment train. In equipment grouping, the largest and most complex item brackets smaller identical-design units.

Bracketing is only defensible when the members are genuinely similar and the selection rationale is documented and risk-based. A new product or a design change must be assessed against the existing bracket, and may fall outside it and require its own study.
