What a definition is not

The qualification of critical facility utilities — such as purified water, water for injection, clean steam, compressed air and gases, and HVAC — that directly or indirectly contact product or affect product quality, demonstrating through IQ, OQ, and PQ that the utility consistently meets its defined quality attributes under normal operating conditions.

Water systems are the archetype: PQ for a purified water or WFI system typically runs in phases — an intensive short-term phase demonstrating the system can be controlled, a longer phase confirming performance across seasonal variation, and an ongoing monitoring phase that continues indefinitely once the system is in routine use.

HVAC and compressed-gas qualification follow the same IQ/OQ/PQ logic scaled to what the utility actually needs to demonstrate — temperature and humidity control and airflow patterns for HVAC, purity and moisture content for compressed gases — with the specific parameters tied back to how the utility is used downstream.
