The distinction matters because reprocessing, using an established step of the approved process, generally requires less extensive justification than rework, which by definition falls outside the validated process and must itself be evaluated, and often validated, as a new or modified process before use.

Both paths require quality unit review and approval before execution, an assessment of impact on product quality — including stability, since a reworked or reprocessed batch may age differently from a normally processed one — and documentation in the batch record explaining the deviation and corrective action taken.

Reprocessing and rework are not routine responses to poor first-pass yield; a rising frequency of either is itself a quality signal warranting investigation of the underlying process robustness, and is a standard input to product quality review.
