What a definition is not

Physical or chemical methods — including vacuum decay, high-voltage leak detection, headspace gas analysis, tracer gas, and dye ingress — used to detect breaches in a sealed container closure system that could permit microbial ingress or loss of product integrity, commonly used as a rapid, deterministic, non-destructive alternative or complement to microbial container closure integrity testing.
Deterministic physical leak tests, such as vacuum decay and high-voltage leak detection, are increasingly favoured over microbial (probabilistic) container closure integrity challenge tests because they directly measure a physical property of the seal rather than inferring integrity from the absence of microbial ingress in a sample.
Method selection depends on the container type and defect size of interest — headspace gas analysis for lyophilized or gas-headspace products, vacuum decay for rigid containers, high-voltage leak detection for glass vials and ampoules — and the chosen method must be validated to detect defects at the maximum allowable leak limit.
Leak testing may be applied 100% in-line during fill-finish for certain container types, or on a sampling basis validated to a defined confidence and reliability level, depending on the criticality of the product and container system.
