A documented, periodically requalified process verifying that an individual can don sterile cleanroom garments in the required sequence without compromising the garment’s barrier integrity or introducing contamination, assessed through direct observation and microbiological sampling (glove and gown contact plates) against predefined acceptance criteria before that person may work unsupervised in classified areas.
Personnel are the largest single source of microbial contamination in cleanrooms, so gowning qualification is the control point that confirms an individual’s aseptic technique before they are permitted independent access to Grade A/B areas.
Initial qualification typically requires several consecutive successful gowning and monitoring events; ongoing requalification at a defined frequency, and any lapse in area access beyond a defined period, both trigger a repeat qualification.
Trending of individual gowning qualification and personnel monitoring results over time can identify a specific operator whose technique is degrading before it manifests as an environmental monitoring excursion.
