What a definition is not
A definition is SPEQ’s plain-language decode of how a term is used in practice, cited to the documents that define it. It is a practitioner reference, not legal or regulatory advice, it does not replace the definition in the source, and where a regulator’s wording differs the regulator’s wording governs.
Static data is a fixed record such as a paper printout or a PDF, where the format is set at the moment of creation. Dynamic data allows ongoing interaction — reprocessing, re-integration, zooming into a chromatogram, or requerying — so the record must remain in a form that preserves that interactive capability.
The distinction matters because a printout of a chromatogram is not equivalent to the electronic data file behind it: the printout is static, but the underlying data is dynamic and lets an analyst re-integrate peaks or change parameters. Treating the static printout as the complete record can hide reprocessing and integration decisions.
For dynamic records, the electronic original (with its metadata and audit trail) must be retained and reviewable in a form that preserves the dynamic functionality throughout the retention period — a static copy alone is not a true copy of a dynamic record.
