The graduated positive (or, for containment applications, negative) air pressure differential deliberately maintained between adjoining rooms of different air cleanliness classification, sustaining directional airflow from higher- to lower-classified space to prevent ingress of contamination. Pressure differentials are continuously monitored, alarmed, and periodically requalified as part of HVAC qualification.
The cascade is engineered so that air always flows from the cleanest area outward, meaning any door opening or air leakage moves particles away from the most critical zone rather than into it.
A typical aseptic processing suite cascades from Grade A/B critical areas through progressively lower grades to the general corridor, with a minimum differential (commonly 10–15 Pa) specified between adjacent grades and validated during HVAC qualification.
Loss of differential pressure — from a door left open, filter loading, or fan failure — is treated as a potential contamination control event and is one of the most common cleanroom alarm-driven deviations.
