What a definition is not
A definition is SPEQ’s plain-language decode of how a term is used in practice, cited to the documents that define it. It is a practitioner reference, not legal or regulatory advice, it does not replace the definition in the source, and where a regulator’s wording differs the regulator’s wording governs.
The multidimensional combination and interaction of input variables — such as material attributes and process parameters — demonstrated to provide assurance of quality, established under a Quality by Design approach and submitted for regulatory approval; movement within an approved design space is not considered a change that requires additional regulatory review.
Design space is established through structured experimentation — typically Design of Experiments — that characterizes how critical process parameters and material attributes interact to affect critical quality attributes, then defines the multidimensional region within which quality is assured. It is deliberately broader than a single fixed set point, giving manufacturing flexibility to operate anywhere inside that region.
The key regulatory consequence is procedural: once a design space is approved as part of a marketing authorization, moving operating conditions within it does not itself trigger a post-approval variation, whereas moving outside it does. Internally, however, a site still runs any such move through its own change control, since the underlying process is changing even if no regulatory filing is required.
