What a definition is not

A plant-wide control system in which controllers are distributed across process units but managed under one integrated engineering, operating and historian environment. Typically chosen for continuous or large multi-unit processes where a single coordinated control philosophy matters.
A distributed control system spreads controllers across process units while keeping one engineering environment, one operator interface and one historian. That integration is the point: a change made once propagates consistently, and the process history for a batch can be assembled without joining data from several systems. In regulated plants it usually sits at the centre of the automation layer, with skid-level controllers subordinate to it.
Its integration is also its regulatory weight. One engineering environment means one place where control logic, alarm limits and recipe parameters can be altered, so access control, change control and audit trail on that environment carry the whole plant’s trustworthiness. A DCS whose engineering access is shared among a maintenance group has a control problem that no amount of operational discipline downstream will fix.
The validation effort follows the use, not the product. What a DCS must do for the process — hold parameters, execute the recipe, enforce interlocks, record what happened — is what has to be verified, along with the configured controls that make its records trustworthy. Treating it as a software package to be exhaustively function-tested produces a large package and a small assurance.
