What a definition is not

The number of times per hour that a room’s total air volume is theoretically replaced by supply air, expressed in air changes per hour (ACH); a core HVAC design and qualification parameter for cleanrooms and controlled manufacturing areas, set high enough to support the room’s required particulate and microbial classification and to dilute or remove generated contamination.
Higher-classified areas require substantially higher air change rates than lower-grade support areas — Grade A unidirectional zones operate on continuous unidirectional flow rather than a discrete ACH figure, while Grade B, C, and D rooms are commonly specified in the tens of air changes per hour.
Air change rate alone does not guarantee cleanliness; airflow pattern, filter coverage, room geometry, and equipment/personnel activity all interact with ACH to determine whether particulate is effectively removed, which is why smoke studies and recovery testing accompany the numeric ACH specification.
ACH is measured and requalified periodically as part of the room’s HVAC performance qualification, alongside particle counts, pressure differentials, and temperature/humidity.
