The plant item that conditions and moves air for an HVAC system — fans, heating and cooling coils, humidification, and filter banks — typically serving a defined group of rooms. Which rooms share an AHU determines which areas can be segregated and which fail together.

An air handling unit conditions and moves the air that a cleanroom’s classification depends on. Fans, coils, humidification and filter banks together set supply temperature, humidity, volume and cleanliness; the room grade is a consequence of what the AHU delivers and how the room is configured, not a property of the room itself. One unit commonly serves several rooms, which is why a single AHU failure can take a suite out of classification at once.

Its regulatory significance comes from that dependency. Air change rates, recovery times, filter integrity and the pressure cascade all trace back to the unit, so changes to it — a fan speed, a filter specification, a damper position, an added room on the same system — are changes to the qualified state of every room it serves. Projects routinely underestimate this, because the change is made in a plant room and the affected space is elsewhere.

Maintenance is part of the control, not adjacent to it. Filter change intervals, belt and bearing condition, and coil cleanliness determine whether the unit still does what it was qualified to do, and the maintenance record is where that evidence lives.
