HOW IT TOUCHES THE QUALITY SYSTEM

Calibration is the foundation of data credibility: an uncalibrated or out-of-tolerance instrument invalidates the data it produced and, potentially, every product decision made on that data — which is why calibration status is one of the first things an inspector checks.

ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is granted per method and per matrix, so the accredited scope and the calibration schedule — not just the certificate on the wall — are what a client must verify.

An out-of-tolerance finding triggers a backward impact assessment: which measurements, batches, and releases relied on the drifted instrument since its last good calibration, and whether any of them must now be re-evaluated.

  • Relying on an accreditation certificate without checking the scope covers the specific measurement

Why is metrological traceability important in GxP?

Because a measurement with no traceable reference cannot be trusted or defended. Traceability links an instrument’s reading, through an unbroken chain of calibrations with stated uncertainty, to a national or international standard. Without it, the data an instrument produces — and the batch-release decisions made on that data — rest on nothing an inspector will accept.

Is an ISO/IEC 17025 certificate enough to trust a calibration lab?

Not on its own. Accreditation is granted per method and per matrix, so what matters is whether the lab’s accredited scope actually covers the specific measurement you need. Check the schedule behind the certificate — a lab can be accredited for one quantity and range and not another.
